We are living in a new reality, a digital ecosystem that modulates our collective consciousness through algorithms and hypnotic stimuli. This is the “Hypnosphere,” a world where truth is fragmented into algorithmic bubbles and our freedom is largely an illusion, guided by micro-suggestions that shape our desires and fears.

In this environment, our passions—our deepest longings, fears, and hopes—are no longer our own. They have become the raw material for an “economy of trance,” where our attention is monetized and our psychic energy is harvested. We are kept in a state of “algorithmic trance,” where infinite scrolling replaces critical reflection and personalized recommendations act as continuous suggestions, detaching our passions from our reason. We are being controlled, not by force, but by the subtle, relentless exploitation of our own hearts.

In a world “which seems to have lost its heart,” what is the way out?

Pope Francis, in his encyclical Dilexit Nos (“He Loved Us”), offers a profound answer. He calls us back to the symbolic center of the human person: the heart. The heart, in the biblical sense, is not just the seat of emotion; it is the core of our being, the place of sincerity where intellect, will, and passions are meant to find their harmony. A society without heart, he warns, is a fragmented and isolated one.

The modern tragedy is this fragmentation. The Hypnosphere thrives by keeping our passions severed from our reason. It provokes emotional reactions—outrage, desire, envy—that bypass our capacity for deliberate, thoughtful action.

Where can we find the grace to reintegrate ourselves? Pope Francis points us to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This devotion is not, as some might think, a sentimental worship of a physical organ. It is the adoration of a love that is both fully divine and fully human. The Heart of Christ is the ultimate symbol of a love that heals and restores order. It is a “blazing furnace of divine and human love” where we can finally come to know ourselves and learn how to love.

In the pierced Heart of Jesus, we see a love that does not exploit our passions but purifies them. It is a love that does not manipulate our reason but illuminates it. It is the place where our restless, exploited hearts can be re-ordered and harmonized by the grace of God. Pope Francis reminds us that this interior conversion is the key to healing our fragmented world, stating that “Our hearts, united with the heart of Christ, are capable of working this social miracle”.

Therefore, piety to the Sacred Heart is more than a private devotion. It is a radical act of spiritual resistance. It is the conscious choice to anchor our hearts in a love that is true, healing, and liberating, against a system that seeks to keep us divided and controlled. By turning to the Heart of Christ, we find the grace to become whole again, and in that wholeness, we find the strength to begin building the only true alternative to the Hypnosphere: a Civilization of Love and Peace.
